North Projects has acquired new office space in Tasmania!

The Hobart-based office is headed by Michael James who provides advice across all services and all sectors. Michael has had over 35 years of experience in project management. This includes 12 years in the Middle East, where he was involved in many complex high-value infrastructure projects, such as a FIFA World Cup Stadium in Qatar and mega scale master planned projects in Riyadh.

Michael has been working hard to build the business across our southern-most state during the last 12 months, operating out of a serviced office.

“Business growth has now given us the confidence to secure a more permanent presence," Michael said.

"We have leased space in a very nice sandstone heritage building in Macquarie Street, conveniently located near our main clients."

Services on offer in Tasmania

Services include providing professional advice to government on civil and building infrastructure developments, and to the private sector for commercial projects.

Michael said that having a permanent presence in Tasmania positions the company to directly employ locally.

“But while we will be working on a local basis, North is very much a national business with a national knowledge base," he said.

"Individuals with specialist and sector-specific expertise located across the country are drawn on as needed.”

Having a presence nationally in this way enables North Projects to provide a full suite of services to clients across all states, including Tasmania.

Current projects underway in Tasmania

There are already several state-wide projects underway.

- Civil infrastructure upgrades

North is contract superintendent on two contracts forming part of the ten-year upgrade project of the Midland Highway, a 176km road that connects Hobart to Launceston. Works include road widening, junction improvements and building new overtaking lanes and safety barriers.

- Healthcare enhancements

North is providing contract administration for the Department of Health’s redevelopment of the Royal Hobart Hospital. Upgrades to the hospital include improved facilities, expanded clinical space and developing a more comfortable environment for patients.

We are also the project manager for a proposed new day surgery theatre for Healthscope, which is expanding from the Hobart Private Hospital across Argyle Street via an airbridge into the Vibe Hotel building.

- Educational institutions

North has completed a 30-year Master Plan for Hutchins Private Boys’ School in Hobart. The plan set out a clear plan for the structured long-term vision for the school’s development, including its centrepiece multi-function enabling project.

- Private engineering companies

North continues to provide cost advice to engineering consultants on various transport infrastructure schemes across the state.

Future ambitions for North Projects

Michael says that the aim is very much to integrate into the Tassie landscape as a local provider, but one that is backed by a national team of multi-disciplinary expert resources. Providing local employment and local capacity building is a high priority, which helps support the local economy and enhance the capability of building professionals in the state.

"Employing locally is something that matters a lot to the business," he said.

As well as supporting valued clients, Michael says it is his vision to use the Tasmanian presence to support the wider growth of the company.
